Find the Trolls of Denmark

Danish artist Thomas Dambo creates giant troll sculptures from recycled materials to promote sustainability. His works are found worldwide, including Denmark, where his Troll Map helps locate them.

Find the big trolls made by waste by a Danish artist. He writes:

I’m Thomas Dambo, Danish recycling artist. Our world is drowning in trash while we are running out of natural resources.
In 2011 I quit my job to become an artist and follow my mission to ‘Waste no more’.

Today, I spend my life showing the world that beautiful things can be made out of trash. I give new life to discarded materials by turning them into large-scale artworks. My journey has led me to create artworks in 20 countries across five continents, including my giant  Trolls ,  plastic works ,  birdhouses , and  Happy Wall exhibitions . All these projects are realized using hundreds of tons of recycled materials, working in and with local communities, who are co-creators of the art that I make because the mission I follow needs the involvement of everybody. I also host talks as a speaker, such as  TEDx talk , and sometimes I host workshops to teach people how to reuse and upcycle.

Enjoy the nature of The Botanical Garden

Visit the Botanical Garden before 6 PM, then enjoy a takeaway dinner in the historic and lively King’s Garden, a beloved park in Copenhagen.

Go for a visit in the Botanical Garden before 6 PM. The Botanical Garden is a beautiful oasis in the heart of Copenhagen, inviting peace and immersion in the world of nature. The garden is home to Denmark’s collection of rare plants from around the world and is especially known for its iconic Palm House. Afterwards you can bring take away dinner to the King’s Garden. The King’s Garden is a firm favourite with the people of Copenhagen. On sunny days, they flock here to enjoy a picnic in the sun, play games and go for a leisurely stroll.

The garden was originally laid out in the early 17th century as a park and kitchen garden to Christian IV’s castle Rosenborg. At the time, it formed the setting of various entertainments arranged to amuse the King and his guests and supplied the royal household at Copenhagen Castle with fruit and vegetables. Right up until the turn of the last century, the garden continued to be used as a kitchen garden for the royal household.

Today, the King’s Garden is one of Copenhagen’s most popular parks, attracting approximately three million visitors every year. The park continues to form the backdrop of many entertaining activities; for example, it is home to a fairytale playground and a traditional puppet theatre.

Explore the Royal Library

The Royal Library on Slotsholmen blends a historic 1648 building with the modern Black Diamond. It holds nearly all Danish books, some from 1482. A hidden garden nearby offers a quiet retreat.

The Royal Library, on the island of Slotsholmen, is made up of two sections: the original building, founded in 1648, and the modern extension, completed in 1999. The newer part of the library sits gleaming on the shores of Copenhagen harbor; it’s known as the Black Diamond due to its shiny marble exterior.

The library holds almost every book ever printed in the Danish language, with some titles dating back as far as 1482. The interior is a fascinating piece of architecture and the central hall is accessible to the public, but books must be reserved in advance and accessed in one of the reading rooms.

Planning tip: Between the charming historic side of the library and the entrance to the Danish Parliament you’ll find a peaceful hidden garden where you can sit by the fountain and take a break from a busy day of exploring.
